New Products at Atlascopy.com 3. General Tips on Getting the Most for Your Money ================================================== 1. News from the InkJet Industry Canon says "Nein!" to Pelikan in Patent Infringement Suit Canon Inc. has filed a suit with the Düsseldorf District Court in Germany against Pelikan Hardcopy Deutschland GmbH and Pelikan Hardcopy European Logistics & Services GmbH for patent infringe- ment. In the case, filed on April 11, Canon alleges that Pelikan's marketing of several ink jet printer cartridges for use in Canon-brand ink jet printers infringes on Canon patents. The Canon legal action calls for a permanent injunction against any further distribution and marketing by Pelikan of the infringing cartridges, as well as the disposal of all remaining inventories and compensation of damages. Following thorough inspection and analysis of several ink jet printer cartridges for use in Canon-brand ink jet printers being marketed by Pelikan, Canon came to the conclusion that the products infringed on two Canon patents and decided to file a patent infringement suit. Epson Rolls a Seven: The Epson Stylus Photo 2200, A New Seven-Color Archival Desktop Photo Printer Epson America Inc. is introducing the Epson Stylus Photo 2200, its latest desktop photo printer. The new product is designed for anyone who is serious about photography, ranging from amateurs to professional portrait, commercial and fine art photographers. It replaces the award-winning Epson Stylus Photo 2000P and is loaded with features that will set a new standard for desktop photographic printing. By using Epson's new seven-color UltraChrome inks, the Epson Stylus Photo 2200 is able to print images at fast speeds with a larger color gamut than the previous generation of Epson printers. These unique pigment-based archival inks reproduce the color range, density and saturation of dye-based inks more than ever before. By listening to photographers and what they want in the ultimate photo printer, Epson developed UltraChrome ink, a brand new generation of pigment ink. Building on the technology developed for the Epson Archival Ink and the Epson DuraBright Ink, this new UltraChrome Ink retains the advantages of high resistance to water and light, plus the largest color range for pigment inks. The Epson Stylus Photo 2200 is the first printer to utilize UltraChrome inks, providing a wide color gamut that is now extremely close to the gamut of the popular six-color, dye-based Epson inks with more vibrant and saturated reds, oranges and yellows. This printer also can print stunning black and white photographs with the addition of a new lower density black ink -- Light Black -- which helps produce more neutral grays. The UltraChrome ink has faster printing and drying times enabling the printer to achieve a print speed of four minutes for an 8" x 10" photograph on glossy paper, which is three times faster than the Epson Stylus Photo 2000P. The printer also features new interchangeable black inks to allow users to choose between the printer's standard Photo Black cartridge and an optional Matte Black cartridge. The Photo Black ink supports any type of paper and the Matte Black ink supports matte paper only. The Matte Black also yields higher density and contrast on matte papers and is ideal for matte fine art photography. Furthermore, the printer offers a resolution of up to 2880 x 1440 dpi using ultra small four-picoliter droplets, which produces an equivalent dot size to a two-picoliter dye-based droplet. The printer uses Epson's exclusive Micro Piezo ink jet technology for creating incredible detail, beautiful skin tones and an ultra-wide color range that is ideal for photography. ================================================= 2. General Tips on Getting the Most for Your Money Each Atlascopy newsletter provides a easy few tips to help you in the inkjet cartridge re-filling process...which, in turn, can help you save time, energy and (best of all) money. Getting the Most From Your HP Cartridges If there is air in any of the nozzles, ink from one of the other nozzles can, by capillary action, be drawn across to the empty nozzle and contaminate the chamber. Also overfilling certain cartridges can cause cross chamber contamination. If the contamination is severe the cartridge may not be able to be repaired. In the case of slight contamination you can try letting the cartridge sit on a damp cloth overnight. The contaminated ink will be drawn out of the print head by capillary action. Run some cleaning routines to prime the cartridge. One of the biggest problems with the HP C6578 and C1823 is cross contamination. If there is air in any of the nozzles, ink from one of the other nozzles can, by capillary action, be drawn across to the empty nozzle and contaminate the chamber. Also overfilling certain cartridges can cause cross chamber contamination. If the contamination is severe the cartridge may not be able to be repaired. In the case of slight contamination, you can try letting the cartridge sit on a damp cloth overnight. The contaminated ink will be drawn out of the print head by capillary action. You may want to run some cleaning routines to prime the cartridge. Thus, when the yellow chamber went empty and the printer continued printing, what happens is the cyan ink has traveled to the yellow chamber causing cross contamination. You unknowingly fill the yellow compartment because it is empty, so when you go to reuse the cartridge you now have a chartreuse or green color coming out of your printer. Of course, you immediately blame the ink that you used to refill...when, in fact, it is a problem with the construction of the cartridge itself. Psssst...what HP doesn't want you to know: C6578D which is half filled (19ml/cc) with ink. C6578A which is filled to (38ml/cc) capacity. Look here for pictures: http://atlascopy.com/C6578.htm The D cartridge comes with all new Printers that HP makes. The C6578D cartridge retails for about $35 and the C6578A retails for about $60. So you think, "I will save money if I buy the C6578D"...but you are only getting half the ink. Well, what if you want a remanufactured cartridge? Do you get a half-filled cartridge or do you get a full cartridge? Our remanufactured cartridges are filled to capacity (38ml/cc), and they retail for $22.95. So, the only difference between an "A" cartridge and a "D" cartridge is the amount of ink first placed in the cartridge by HP. Look here for pictures: http://atlascopy.com/C6578.htm If you have a tip you would like to contribute you can e-mail it to atlas@dvol.com. ================================================== Special note: Some of you are confused by our offering of two different web sites. Essentially, they both offer the same products but the difference is in the shopping cart area. Many of you asked for a shopping cart that retains the user information. The new site does that. Others complained when they were required to set up an account in order to purchase anything. So we are keeping both sites active to make everybody happy. The other difference is the new site has the ability to process credit cards in real time. The security is much higher and people get frustrated when their credit card is declined. If you want to order from the new site you MUST use the correct billing address, which is the add- ress where your credit card statement is sent to. Also, the new site will not accept any International credit cards. If you are having problems with your credit card on the new site then you should use the old site. The old site does NOT have real time processing, we will run your credit card manually which means you won't get rejected, unless of course you deserve it. :-) The new site is at: http://shop.atlascopy.com The old site is at: http://atlascopy.com ================================================== That's all for now.
